On Thanksgiving about 10 years ago, the family was milling around, sitting around talking. All of a sudden, someone let out a terribly shrill whoop and my 40 year old, youngest brother, collapsed on the floor. He began violently shaking and was having his first ever seizure. Luckily, my sister-in-law, a hospce nurse, was there and knew exactly what to do. She yelled across the house to anyone listening: “Call 911”. It was too late to get the proverbial “spoon in his mouth” so she turned him on his side and waited for the shaking to stop. Shortly, the ambulance arrived and the paramedics or EMTs (whichever they were) stabilized him and took him to the hospital. My oldest brother, in the car behind, followed the ambulance to the hospital. They kept my brother for a few hours and then sent him home with medication for seizures. He wouldn’t take the medication. He had chewed up his tongue pretty good. We worried the rest of the visit that he would have another seizure, but he didn’t. It truly was dreadful but there was no loathing.
